Frank Houghtaling vs. Lemuel Nelson
IBC Junior Welterweight Title fight
March 1, 2002

Oneida Nation Homelands - Another exciting, but controversial night of boxing at the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, NY.  In the first match of the evening Willie Phillips (20-3, 18KOs) was disqualified at 36 seconds into the sixth round for repeated low blows.  Phillips seemed to have the fight in hand, however in the sixth round after being warned in earlier rounds for low blows was disqualified for a low blow that put Tim Knight (18-42 5 KOs) to the canvas.  The disqualification appeared to be unwarranted.   Referee Tim Boehlert had provided warning though had not deducted any points from Phillips for earlier low blows This fight is under protest.

In the main event for the IBC Junior Middleweight Title, Frank Houghtaling (15-7-5, 3 KOs), of Albany and Lemuel Nelson (22-5-0, 11 KOs), of Pensacola, FL fought to a majority draw.  In the earlier rounds of the fight Houghtaling had a slight advantage, however at 1 minute and 10 seconds into the eighth round Houghtaling caught a right to the jaw that brought him to the canvas.  It seemed to be Nelson's fight after the eighth round.  After 12 rounds the fight went to the score cards and was scored as follows:

Don Ackerman:  114-113 (Nelson)
Frank Adams:  114-113 (Houghtaling)
Rubin Garcia:  114-114 (Draw)

Nelson's corner was upset and felt the draw was influenced by the hometown atmosphere for Houghtaling.  BoxingHelp.com also had this a very close fight and gave the advantage to Nelson.

The card also highlighted Utica, NY native Jason Bouvouso (3-1) who was defeated by Alvesto Mills (6-16).  Jason a hometown favorite looked good in the ring, though at times showed a lack of experience and control.  Throughout the short 4 round bout he was warned several times for not breaking cleanly.  It seemed that Bouvouso had the fight won until he left himself open at the end of the 4th round and caught a hard right from Mills to the left temple. Jason was able to right himself just before the final bell though was later taken to a local hospital for observation.

The undercard results are as follows:

Middleweight - 4 rds
Les Ralston (1-0) unanimous decision
John Spell (1-7-3)

Junior Middleweight - 8 rds
Robert "Pushup" Frazier (24-5-2, 14 KOs) TKO3
Jose Aponte (18-18-3, 6 KOs)
